When Pran offered help to 'friend' Kapil

Mumbai: "Yaari hai imaan mera, yaar meri zindagi." When veteran actor Pran Krishan Sikand, well known as Pran, was mouthing these lines during a song in Bollywood classic Zanjeer (1973) to demonstrate his friendship with Amitabh Bachchan, he was probably exhibiting an admirable trait of his personality. It was friendship that tied India's most famous villain, who was a huge cricket fan, to Kapil Dev, India's most famous allrounder. In 1979-80' it was his gesture of friendship that Kapil recalled while paying tribute to his old friend, who passed away in Mumbai, at the age of 93, on Friday. "Back then, I needed money to go to England for treatment of my injured knee. Pran saab told me: 'Just don't compromise with your health. Let me know if you need help.' His gesture really touched me," an emotional Kapil told TOI on Saturday. Though the BCCI later took care of the expenses, Pran's offer to sponsor his treatment was a huge boost to Kapil, who was gaining rapid strides in international cricket, at a time when there wasn't much money in the game. Reminiscing about Pran, Kapil said: "He was a legendary actor, one of the best that I have seen. But what was more important to me, was that he was a better human being than an actor. He was like a father to me, and if I had a son, I would have named him Pran. I admire the way he lived his life." An avid sports lover, Pran would also be seen at the Cooperage, watching football matches in the 70s.
