Looking ahead at the 2014 elections
With 2014 just round the corner and the Lok Sabha elections looming on the horizon, it appears that we have three potential outcomes ahead of us. One, the UPA could return to power. Two, the NDA could come to power. Three, there could be a coalition government with a hotchpotch of regional parties supported by the BJP or the Congress. All three of these options have been tried and tested in the past. Been there, seen it. Not surprisingly, all of them have similar shortcomings. None have any form of intra-party democracy whatsoever, all of them have hordes of corruption charges against their key members, all of them routinely give tickets to people with criminal records, none of them believe in having a transparent candidate selection process, and all their election campaigns are funded by black money. When it comes to bringing political parties under the ambit of RTI, not surprisingly, they are all unanimous in their opposition.
Let's look at the leadership of the three potential alternatives. The recent ordinance saga is a perfect demonstration of UPA's style of functioning. After weeks of internal deliberation and all-party meetings, the PM and his illustrious cabinet decide on an ordinance to aid criminals in politics. After mounting public criticism of the ordinance, Rahul Gandhi barges in at the eleventh hour and plays savior. It also proves that the current crop of UPA ministers, including the PM, are power hungry opportunists lacking even an iota of self-respect. Perhaps Rahul Gandhi is a little slow on the uptake and hence always a late entrant. He performed a similar "gig" on the Lokpal issue two years after the Lokpal battle was raging, with a speech in Parliament calling for Lokpal to be made an independent constitutional body. Of course, his rhetoric remained rhetoric and he did nothing to drive his party towards an acceptable Lokpal bill. There is little doubt that the Gandhis hold the real power in the UPA with no accountability whatsoever. How long is the country going to tolerate this arrangement?
As for the BJP, we have Mr. Modi who has been anointed their PM candidate. Many of his fans believe that he is his own man. "When you vote for Modi, you get Modi and not the BJP," they profess. "He has transformed Gujarat. He is not corrupt. He is a terrific administrator. India will develop under his leadership." His fans can go on and on... They dream of a Modi-wave sweeping the country, though the BJP is now for the most part just a party restricted to the Hindi-belt.
At a recent public meeting, Modi took the Pakistani PM to task for his purported comments in some obscure off-the-record conversation. It's a perfect example of irresponsible rabble-rousing of the kind that an aspiring PM should definitely avoid. At the same time, he has nothing to say on the ordinance because BJP has been equally culpable supporting it on the inside while pretending on the outside to be against it. Babu Bokhiria continues to remain in Modi's cabinet after being sentenced to three years imprisonment in the Rs. 54-crore illegal limestone mining case. Besides, there are 32 BJP MLAs in the Gujarat assembly facing criminal charges. Gujarat has had no Lokayukta for over ten years now. All of Modi's so-called good governance credentials can't hide the above mentioned baggage. Those who clamor for his ride to the PM's chair should think again. Is this the track record that we need in our future PM? And we haven't even mentioned the 2002 riots.
As for the third outcome, let's look at the potential leaders - Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati, Jayalalitha, to name the top few. All three of them have disproportionate assets cases against them. Is the country going to be any better with such people at the helm of affairs?
If the UPA returns, it could be interpreted as the country having forgiven them for all their rampant corruption. A scary thought to say the least. At the same time, it could be the end of the BJP as we know it and a huge setback for Modi. If the BJP were to come to power, it would be an opportunity for Modi to try his hand at coalition politics, something completely alien to him. On the other hand, should a coalition of regional parties come to power, it will clearly mean that both the BJP and the Congress are further losing their significance as national parties.
Given the glaring deficiencies of all three options, it's a perfect time for the country to reject all three options, and send a message to the political class that it's time for a whole new kind of politics. Perhaps the likes of the Aam Aadmi party and the Loksatta party can provide the direction needed to take India into a more promising future.

Is the Prana Biotechnology Rally Out of Gas? (INO, PRAN)
I have no doubt that even broaching the subject will enflame some fans and followers of Prana Biotechnology Limited (NASDAQ:PRAN), so let me deflect some of that by being clear right from the start - what you're about to read is on no way a reflection of my opinion regarding the company. PRAN is a fine organization, and its work in the field of Alzheimer's (Prana Biotechnology is developing an Alzheimer's therapy, but the same underlying biotechnology also holds promise as a Parkinson's treatment) is compelling. But, this has nothing to do with that perceived, underlying 'value'... current or future. This has to do with the way the stock has taken on a life of its own, which can be fun for a while, but eventually can be painful as reality sets in. I fear what happened to Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NYSEMKT:INO) is also going to happen to PRAN, which is fine if you're nimble, but is miserable if you can't start at you're trading screen all day long.Just for the record, as my pessimism on INO was ultimately proven to be right, though I was WAAAYYY to early. I figured the small pop we'd seen from Inovio Pharmaceuticals had run its course when it rallied from $0.66 to $0.89 by the first of July. As it turns out, INO was on course to rally for a whole 'nother month, reaching a high of $3.03 before it was all said and done. Granted, the stock still fell back to a low of $1.22 a couple of weeks later, almost getting back to where I assumed it was going to top out anyway. But still, I missed the boat on that one. I don't think we'll see another month's worth of bullishness from Prana Biotechnology Limited like we did with Inovio Pharmaceuticals, however, for a couple of reasons.
One of those reasons is the fact that PRAN has already rallied more than 160% in less than two months, which is roughly in line with how far and how long INO did before hitting a major top. Also, while Inovio dropped some strong clues of a top being made (like a volume spike on a rally that carried it well into overbought territory), the volume spike we saw from PRAN yesterday was even stronger than the last-hurrah volume surge we saw when INO was hitting its peak. Throw in the fact that Prana Biotechnology shares left behind a gap at Friday's open, and then peeled back considerably from the high of $6.24 to close at $5.83, and what you have are several warning signs that the rally is now running on fumes. We may even see a little more upside today, according to the pre-market action. That doesn't really change the fact that the rally is getting very, very tired though. If we end up making a small gain but on lower volume, and/or of we end up making a doji bar where the open and the close are practically the same, that'll be another sign that the runup has spent all of its fuel. Again - and I can't stress this enough - this is on no way a judgment call on Prana Biotechnology Limited and its efforts to develop critical drugs. This is a judgment call on the way a stock has separated itself from the company and taken on a life of its own, and is being driven by hype and euphoria. When hype and euphoria finally fader though (and they always do eventually), a rally can stop and turn on a dime. If you really like the company, don't sweat or fret it - just use that dip as a buying opportunity. Front Row: starring... and Pran!
The bone-chilling voice, the stare-into-your-soul sneer and the limp cigarette hanging from the side of thin lips. None of these would have made Pran the most terrifying villain of all times, if it wasn't for his well-cut stylish clothes. Born in a wealthy family in Delhi of the early
'20s, it was no surprise that he took to the dapper fashions of the '40s and the '50s with such flair. He'd easily pull off a Fedora, a pipe and a tweed suit in Adalat (1958) and a Woodstock-inspired slim-fit, round-neck, tie-and-dye T-shirt and bell-bottoms in Jungle Mein Mangal (1972). Pran's early wardrobe in films looks like a vintage fashion dream of a well-dressed man in any era. So, if you haven't gone through a Pran retrospective of films, we suggest you do right away. Pran 'sahab': The beloved bad man of Bollywood
Mumbai: With his dashing mannerisms and intensity, Pran came to be known as the most fearsome villain that Hindi cinema ever had before breaking the mould to play iconic character roles in films like 'Zanjeer' and 'Upkaar' in a career spanning six-decades. The veteran actor died at a hospital here this evening at the age of 93. Such was the magic of his onscreen villainy that people stopped naming their children 'Pran' at the height of his fame. Ironically, while he was feared as a villain on screen, he was a gentleman in real life.
Pran Kishan Sikand was born on February 12, 1920, to a civil engineer in Delhi. He wanted to be a photographer but a chance meeting with writer Wali Mohammad Wali, who was writing Punjabi film 'Yamala Jat', brought him to the world of cinema. He played the hero in the film opposite Noorjehan. The film became a hit and the pair starred together in their first Hindi film 'Khandaan'. After Partition, he started trying his luck in Mumbai without much success. With the help of Saadat Hasan Manto and actor Shyam, Pran landed a role in Dev Anand-Kamini Kaushal starrer 'Ziddi'. With the success of the film, Pran never looked back playing negative roles in 'Madhumati', 'Ram Aur Shyam', 'Munimji' and 'Kashmir Ki Kali'. With a string of powerful performances, Pran had at one stage commanded almost the same prize and sometimes more than onscreen hero and his name would appear alongside the name of the lead actor. Recalling the magic of Pran, Amitabh Bachchan in a foreword to Pran's biography And Pran, wrote, "Onscreen villainy is a thankless job which Pran Saab accepted and carried out with such a degree of perfection that he became the actor the entire nation loved to hate. "That indeed was the measure of his extraordinary success. Parents did not want their children to meet him. Occasionally, he would even be feared and dreaded at public gatherings. Evidently, he came to terms with that, bemused with the power of cinema to influence the audience in a way that sketches only a thin line between the real and the reel." Pran will be forever remembered for bringing villains on par with the heroes, ruling the industry from 1969 to 1982. He commanded equal money and respect for his negative characters in 'Madhumati', 'Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai', 'Ram Aur Shyam' and 'Devdas'. The actor's baritone and good looks helped him bring charm to his villainy which was very unique to Pran. His chameleon-like ability helped Pran transform himself from one of the most hated onscreen villains to one of the most beloved character actors -- be it the 'Mangal chacha' in 'Upkar', Sher Khan of opposite Amitabh Bachchan in 'Zanjeer' or the discipline-loving but soft-hearted grandfather in Gulzar's 'Parichay'. Aamir Khan pays tribute to Pran
Aamir Khan has joined the circle of people from the Bollywood film industry who have paid tribute to legendary actor Pran, who sadly died last week aged 93. Aamir was fortunate enough to have worked with Pran in the film Isi Ka Naam Zindagi (1992). "He was an institution and we have lost one of the legends of Indian cinema," said Aamir to the Indian press. "We have learnt a lot from him. I was fortunate that I got to work with him in the beginning of my career in Isi Ka Naam Zindagi. He was the 'pran' (life) of every film."
Speaking about the distinctive impact which Pran had on Aamir, he had this to say. "I remember as a kid when I used to see Pran saab's name in the titles, I used to get scared such was his impact and work. He made a huge contribution to the Indian cinema."
Pran is considered to be one of the greatest actors/villains in Bollywood history. He is well known for his work in films like Madhumati (1958), Upkar (1967) and Zanjeer (1973). He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in May for his pivotal contributions to Indian Cinema.
