Diane Chambers — the real one who grew up in Coalinga and not the character Shelley Long played on "Cheers" — has been acting since she was a young girl.
No production has gotten her as much attention as the recent Syfy Channel movie "Sharknado." Chambers plays Agnes, one of the residents of the nursing home that comes under attack by sharks being tossed about in a tornado.
"The amazing thing about the role is that I didn't even have to audition for it," Chambers says. "They were so kind to me. They put together a lot of small characters to make Agnes."
This is the third movie Chambers has made for Asylum Films, the company behind "Sharknado," that also includes "Cleaver Family Reunion" and the upcoming "Zombie Night." Chambers loves working with the production company because of the family atmosphere when filming.
She says the cast and crew of "Sharknado" knew the kind of movie they were making.
"We were laughing our heads off and having so much fun," Chambers says.
She was having such a good time, she had to fight back laughter when she had to deliver the line, "You must be so proud," when she and Ian Ziering's character are watching his son pilot a helicopter near the tornado of sharks.
Chambers has a long list of credits, but "Sharknado" marked the first time the 62-year-old actress shared an on-screen kiss. This came after Agnes and her love interest were saved from a swimming pool and ran from all the flying sharks. Actually, the only shark that was on the set the day she worked was a giant head of one that was so big Chambers could sit in its mouth.
Before moving to Los Angeles to chase an acting career, Chambers attended West Hills College in Lemoore and Fresno State, where she majored in theater. She took a break from acting a few years ago, but she has been busy ever since she started working again. She doesn't know if she will appear in "Sharknado 2."
"When I started acting again, I gave myself 10 years or I would just retire," Chambers says. "But, the past eight or nine years have been very busy. I hope 'Sharknado' affects my career, but if it doesn't I'm having so much fun right now, I could die happy tomorrow."
