Pacific Rim's Guillermo del Toro takes over The Simpsons for inspired ...

Fans of The Simpsons are in for a treat with the opening credits of the latest Halloween special - which have been given a spooky makeover by Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro.

The two-and-a-half minute opening sequence of the episode - the 14th in the show's long-running 'Treehouse of Horror' series - features a Springfield beset by spooky goings-on.

And the filmmaker - whose previous efforts include Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Mimic, has wasted no time in putting his stamp on the show, offering plenty of stunning animated visuals in between the tongue-in-cheek humour.

The infamous 'couch gag' has also been turned into a tribute to Pan's Labyrinth - as Lisa tumbles through the sofa in a sequence reminiscent of that from the original movie.

'I integrated Lisa falling through the couch like Alice in Wonderland but in the dress of the girl from Pan's Labyrinth, ' del Toro explained, 'and instead of landing next to the giant toad in Pan's Labyrinth, she lands next to the Hypnotoad from Futurama.'

He went on to describe the credits as 'a love letter to things that I love, both in The Simpsons and the horror genre.'

The credits sequence comes hot on the heels of the news that the show will kill off a 'major character' in its current, 25th season.

Speaking to the Canada Sun Times as the 25th series of the show kicked off in the US, Al Jean confirmed plans for the character's demise - but stopped short of saying who the victim would be.

'I'll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character,' Jean said, 'but I won't say who it is.'

Abe 'Grampa' Simpson is currently the hot favourite to meet his demise, with Ladbrokes offering 3-1 on the show's patriarch meeting his maker in an upcoming episode.

Sideshow Bob, Comic Book Guy, Edna Krabappel and barman Moe Syzslak are also thought to be in the running for the chop.
